Our Story

There’s a reason our boats are called Lockmaster.
As you cruise the Erie Canal, you’ll encounter one of its most iconic features: the locks—incredible feats of engineering that raise and lower boats between water levels. Experiencing them firsthand is a highlight of canal travel, offering a glimpse into the ingenuity that made this historic waterway possible.

History
Every boat in our Lockmaster fleet was proudly built by Midlakes Navigation in Skaneateles, NY—a company founded by the Wiles family. Inspired by a family trip exploring the canals of the UK aboard a narrowboat, the Wiles brought that same spirit of adventure to the Erie Canal, creating a rental experience that was equal parts charming, comfortable, and unforgettable.
Today, Erie Canal Adventures is honored to carry that legacy forward. Since acquiring the business, we’ve remained committed to the same values: thoughtful craftsmanship, warm hospitality, and helping guests create one-of-a-kind vacations on one of America’s most historic waterways.
